Through The Looking Glass

Installation — the photograph and the handwritten ‘prompt’
Installation — the photograph and the handwritten ‘prompt’

A framed photograph shown with a small magnifying glass and a handwritten page. The page describes the scene in the photograph in words — the whole image written out as text, a picture and its thousand words side by side.

I made versions of this across a few works. Looking back, it predates the logic of image generation — the way pictures are now produced from, and tagged with, written language. The text is, in effect, a prompt; the photograph its output. I'm not sure why I kept doing it at the time, but it's exactly the territory the work now lives in.
